Scientifically, Kew Gardens, also known as The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is internationally important for botanical research and education. However, the magnificent gardens, dating from 1759, also provide a visual feast for millions of visitors every year. Kew Gardens cover 121 hectares in south-west London, and contains the world's largest collection of living plants - more than 30,000 different varieties, in fact. In addition, the site is home to dozens of listed historic buildings, mostly glass houses, conservatories and ornamental structures. One of the more recent additions is a treetop walkway, which allows visitors to access the tree canopy of a woodland glade. Kew is open from 9.30am every day, all year round - closing times vary between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, depending on the season. The Gardens can be reached on the London Underground District Line, or overground, alight at Kew Gardens Station for a five-minute walk to Kew's Victoria Gate Entrance.
