Wax sculptress Marie Tussaud started Madame Tussauds wax museum in Baker Street, London, in 1835, and it now has a number of branches in other major cities all over the world. Formerly Anna Maria Grosholtz, Marie Tussaud was born in France in 1761, and sculpted her first figure in 1777, of Voltaire. Today, more than 800 hours are spent measuring, painting, moulding and sculpting the wax figures of film celebrities, sports stars, famous murderers, royalty and historical people that populate Madame Tussauds with their fascinatingly lifelike presence. Madame Tussauds is just two minutes away from Baker Street tube station on foot, and this station is on the Circle, Bakerloo, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City and Jubilee lines, which means that it's a quick tube trip from anywhere in London. Marylebone train station is just a 10-minute walk from the museum, and numerous bus routes will take you there as well.
