Laid back and intimate are probably the adjectives that best sum up the experience on offer at one of the most iconic of London's many jazz venues - the Jazz Cafe, in Camden Town. Opened in December 1990, in a building that was formerly a branch of Barclays Bank, the Jazz Cafe draws an eclectic clientele and mixed reviews, its guest artists straddling a multitude of musical genres from soul, funk and hip-hop to acid jazz. It is particularly renowned for its Sunday improvised jazz sessions. Its intimate atmosphere is sometimes criticised as being too crowded in such a small space, but a restaurant that overlooks the stage and offers a varied international menu, washed down with a gamut of cocktails, complements it. Doors open at 7pm every night, and the place rocks until around 2am. The closest Underground station is Camden Town, or catch buses 29, 134, 31 and 88.
